It took only 13 days. In just 13 days, Poonam Maini’s life changed forever. Three days before her eighteenth birthday, she entered into an arranged marriage. For eighteen years, Poonam lived under her husband’s rule without question, in what felt like a very long, dark tunnel. After surviving years of abuse, she liberated herself and her children from such tyranny and built an empire out of the rubble of her past. Maini thrived when she had the chance to live authentically – free from cultural limitations, from hate and abuse, from living an artificial life – and has embraced this life of freedom. Share Care Global was created out of her search to love unconditionally, without fear and with her whole heart. This piece of her life is only a small portion of who she is but has become a major facet of her legacy. Why create an organization designed to increase volunteerism? Why focus on personal development? Share Care Global was born out of a need, and some of the people she remembers being most in need in India are women and children.
Though poverty is a global issue, India is home to some of the toughest statistics. Almost half the world lives on less than $2.50 a day, and at least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day. But each day, 195 million people go hungry in India, and 3,000 children die from nutrition related illness. Nearly 17% of the world’s adult population is still not literate, and two thirds of those individuals are women. And while about 25% of the US population volunteers and around 20% do so globally, only 1.5% of India’s population does so. Poonam believes that in order to help make the world better, we must be our best self. “By teaching women and children how to live independently, we allow them to eventually become givers where once they had nothing to give.” In 2017, Share Care Global served thousands of healthy, nutritious meals in Maini’s home village of Garhdiwala. The site is the first of its kind of the region, serving two hot meals a day, seven days a week. Expansion efforts in 2018 and beyond include providing healthcare and educational services for women and children in the community. By providing basic needs and services to these groups, Share Care Global helps change the world – one person at a time. The world needs saving, and Maini believes we can do it together. Join her and the Share Care Global team this October for the second annual fundraising gala – An Evening in India. This year’s program of focus is a girl’s home designed to help spark a change in the lives of 10 troubled youth. Your participation will allow Share Care Global to encourage women and children to live their most authentic lives. Contact the team today to become a sponsor and enjoy An Evening in India with Poonam and her family.
